In this Session we’ll be looking at opening up the drum set by moving from the closed Hi hats to open hi hats, the ride cymbal, toms, and the crash cymbal. This will be similar to previous lessons where we moved from the snare drum to the side stick, sticks to brushes, and hi hat to a shaker. It is a great way to expand and enhance patterns that you have already learned. We will look at eighth note and sixteenth note patterns and end the lesson with our first complex sticking pattern for a floor tom pattern. The two songs I’ve chosen to show examples are, Your Mercy from club vineyards “Fill me now”, (with eighth notes on the floor tom), and All who are thirsty from “I love your presence”, (arranged in 4/4 – with sixteenth notes on the floor tom).

This session’s exercises will be:
Review of basic patterns

  • Open Hi Hat

  • Ride Cymbal

  • Crash Cymbal

  • Hi Tom

  • Mid Tom

  • Floor Tom – eighth notes

  • Floor Tom – sixteenth notes

  • Sixteenth note sticking patterns

Only two more sessions to go in this series! Next time we’ll take a look at an introduction to swing, shuffle, and Jazz patterns.

Thanks to all that have e-mailed me about what would help you next. Suggestions have been: Percussion (Djembe), Drum Fills, Specific patterns for songs, and monster double bass licks...that may be some time...
