This Session we’ll be looking at introducing 16th Notes for the Hi hats. We’ll Focus on three songs that drummers can play sixteenth notes on for the song intro’s: Come, now is the time to worship, Hallelujah, Your love is amazing, and Light the fire again. This recording of Light the fire again is from the new series “Home again” and is a great resource for drummers to play along with. It is similar to the Vineyard Café series that I have talked about in the past in that it doesn’t have a drum set player on it…kind of a super home group on steroids kind of vibe. It’s a well-crafted c.d. series that drummers can easily play along with.
16th Notes are usually counted out as “one-e-and-ah, two-e-and-ah, three-e-and-ah, four-e-and-ah” in a 4/4 measure. Try to play them without, then with accents (Where you make certain sticking louder than others). For example accenting on the beat: “ONE-e-and-ah, TWO-E-and-ah, THREE-E-and-ah, FOUR-E-and-ah,” etc. Playing 16th notes on the hi-hats is a great and easy way to play an introduction to a song and once again…one more tool for our toolbox. While practicing don’t forget to start slow and remember that accuracy in Tempo (Playing in time!) is the goal.
Thanks again for all the responses and feel free to E-mail with any questions or suggestions.
