Syncopation Part 1 (eighth notes)
In this session I’ll be talking about syncopation. It’s a great tool for every drummer and with very little work you can change a songs feel, transitions, and bring life to an old arrangement.
Now the musical definition of syncopation would go something like this: The “Deliberate upsetting of the meter or pulse of a composition by means of a temporary shifting of the accent to a weak beat or an off beat.” Did you get it? How about this - another definition of syncopation is, an “accent on an unexpected beat.” So, lets start with some unexpected accents!
Focusing on the eighth note well go through:
Snare Drum on 2 & 4
Snare Drum on 3
Bass Drum on 2 & 4
Snare Drum on 2, the “and” of 2 & 4
Snare Drum on 2, 4, & the “and” of 4
Snare on the “and” of 2 & beat 4
Snare on 2 and the “and” of beat 4
The songs we’ll be looking at are:
More than ever-Dwell
Right here-Hold on
